Did you know
Stack’s Bowers Galleries is proud to present Washingtoniana from the
Collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania featuring the Collection
of William Spohn Baker at our official auction of the Whitman Coin &
Collectibles Winter Expo? For collectors of Washington medals, William Spohn
Baker needs no introduction as it was his systematic study and arrangement of
the medals in the 1880s that served as the road map for collectors of this
material for over a century. Baker, who died in 1897, was a consummate
Washington scholar, assembling a vast library of volumes on Washington, an
extraordinary collection of more than 1,000 portrait engravings, and about
1,100 medals. These medals have been the core of the numismatic collection of
the Historical Society of Pennsylvania for more than a century. This landmark
collection will be presented in its entirety at our November sale in Baltimore.
