Welcome to the January 2019 NYINC Paper Money Auction

It seems like just yesterday we were ushering in 2018 with our official auction of the New York International Numismatic Convention, and yet, here we are presenting our 2019 NYINC catalog. Once again, we open the year with an exceptional offering, featuring important collections, sets and rarities.

In our 2018 NYINC auction, we offered Part 1 of the prestigious Eldorado Collection of Colombian Paper Money. In this catalog you will find the final pieces from this cabinet. In our August 2018 Official Auction of the ANA World’s Fair of Money, we presented Part 1 of the  collection of scarce, and virtually unseen Argentinian paper money assembled by Robert J. Bauman, author of The Paper Money of Argentina. Toward the beginning of this sale we continue our offering of this collection, including many notes that are Rarity-7, reflecting that no more than three were known at the time this distinction was awarded. The rarity of many of these pieces has been verified by researching collections in banks, museums, and in private collectors’ hands.

We continue our tradition of featuring scarce Canadian notes, in this case highlighted by a rare VG 10 1870 Two Dollar note (lot 30089) and a Gem 66PPQ 1898 DC-13a (lot 30091). The Canadian section also offers items from the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II, including some rare 1935 pieces, and the 1907 Imperial Bank $50 Specimen (lot 30101).

Our Brazilian section of banknotes includes an extraordinary number of high grade proofs, as well as pieces that we have never before offered at auction. While our Hong Kong auctions are a more typical venue for Asian material, we are pleased to have in our 2019 NYINC sale an exceptional quantity of rare, and high grade Asian pieces that are likely missing from even the most advances collections. Highlighting this group is a 1916 Straits Settlements 100 Dollar note immediately followed by the 1925 date (lots 30354 and 30355).

Lots 30346 and 30437 feature the finest PMG graded Rwanda-Burundi 500 and 1000 Franc notes. These pieces are clearly condition anomalies and each presents a unique opportunity for anyone focused on high quality. For those in search of high rarity, we are offering a 1914 Government of Gibraltar 1 Pound note in Fine 15 (lot 30207). This is the only note of the type we have seen or handled; in fact, not one example exists on the PMG census.

Our 2019 NYINC auction catalog presents another excellent sale, offering immaculate notes and rarities, as well as more collector-oriented items. We invite you to look over the catalog and find the notes that are just right for you. You can bid in person at the Grand Hyatt in New York City, by mail or fax, on our website StacksBowers.com, or on our mobile app. We wish you the best of bidding luck.

Enjoy the Paper,

Aris Maragoudakis, Director of World Currency Auctions
