Stack’s Bowers Galleries is honored to offer the Virginia Judge’s Collection of U.S. Currency and Special Serial Numbers in our upcoming August Global Showcase Auction and in a standalone presentation featuring some of his Special Serial Numbers in our September Collectors Choice Online Auction. The Judge’s currency interests were widely varied, with his initial collecting focus geared towards Large Size type notes. Many of the notes to be offered are in desirable collector grades and will garner much bidding interest.
One note of particular interest is a Fr. 93c 1862 $10 Legal Tender graded PMG Choice Very Fine 35 EPQ. It is a lovely $10 Greenback printed by the National Bank Note Co. exhibiting the minimum circulation consistent for the grade and featuring wonderful inking throughout. This Series 20 note is new to the Track & Price census, which enumerates just over 50 examples known today from Series 1-25 with the Starburst at the bottom center of the border. This note bears the First Obligation reverse and was issued under the Act of February 25, 1862, with a Script Date of March 10, 1862. The portrait of Abraham Lincoln used on this popular emission was engraved by Charles Burt.
This pleasing piece of US history will be offered as part of our August Global Showcase Auction carrying an estimate of $4,000 to $6,000 which may well prove conservative based on its pleasing eye appeal.
