The Italian Medallion of our November Auction

This November in Baltimore at our Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo we will offer a large size 1919 25 Lire note from Italy. The note is graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine. This pleasing and scarce note from the Bank of Italy is among the most special notes any Italian collector can acquire.

Only four examples have been graded by PMG with only one finer than the offered note. This very rare piece has maintained incredible embossing even though it is nearly 100 years of age. Wide margins, bold brown ink and softer underprints create exceptional eye appeal. At the right, the motif features the Medallic Head of Italy, with the very detailed eagle and flag resting above it.  The watermark of Minerva, goddess of art and wisdom is featured at left and can also be seen on the back facing the portrait of Minerva. In addition, the ornate blue design on the back offers nice symmetry with a bold 25 at center indicating the value of the note.

This note carries an estimate of $1,750 to $2,750 in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo that will take place November 5-8, 2015, in Baltimore.
