Stack’s Bowers Galleries Offers Choice Mint State “Muera Huerta” Peso

In our upcoming February Collectors Choice Online Auction, Stack’s Bowers Galleries offers some interesting and very charming numismatic treasures. Among these is lot 73452, a 1914 Durango “Muera Huerta” Peso graded MS-63 by PCGS. This piece hails from the time of the Mexican Revolution, a 10-year period of political instability in Mexico between 1910 and 1920. Political power shifted, and periods of outright warfare occurred. Against this background, the United States sought to install a friendly government that protected American business interests, as the U.S. was displeased with the rule of Francisco Madero. A rebel faction led by Felix Diaz clashed with federal troops (under the command of Victoriano Huerta), for control of Mexico City. On the ninth day of the conflict, Huerta and Diaz met in the American ambassador’s office and agreed to work together to install Huerta as president. A few days later Huerta assumed the presidency; his rule was marked by despotism and corruption. Soon forces conspired to reinstall a constitution government, which were supported by new American President  Woodrow Wilson. Thus, the United States played a role in supporting both sides of the conflict.

It was against this background that the “Muera Huerta” Peso was issued in the state of Durango, one of the areas of greatest disdain for Huerta.  The Spanish words “Muera Huerta” translate roughly to “death to Huerta” showing no love for the president. Such an interesting background assures this type’s popularity among collectors of Mexican Revolutionary coinage, and examples trade at relatively high levels compared to other Revolutionary Peso types. The coin in lot 73452 is among the finest certified, with only one example surpassing it on the PCGS census. As such, it represents the opportunity to acquire a piece of history in an elusive state of preservation.
