$1 Silver Certificates from the Series of 1923 are some of the most accessible of all Large Size United States notes and can be obtained in even high Gem Uncirculated condition for under several hundred dollars. It is a prolific issue, with well over 2.5 billion notes issued in the series (spread over three signature combinations) and just over 1.9 billion notes bearing the Speelman-White signature combination (Fr. 237).
When reviewing population data for Large Size $1 Silver Certificates, not a single Large Size $1 Silver Certificate catalog number in PMG’s census boasts a note with a grade higher than 68 EPQ, while only three notes in PCGS Banknote’s census have been graded Superb Gem Unc 69 PPQ. Of those three, two are 1899 $1 Silver Certificates with the Black Eagle motif (Fr. 230 and Fr. 236) and the other is a 1923 $1 Silver Certificate (Fr. 237), colloquially known as a horse-blanket or saddle-blanket. Stack’s Bowers Galleries is pleased to offer this 1923 $1 note, now on display in our Boston store and available for purchase online through our eBay store.
Sitting alone at the top of the certified population for the Fr. 237 catalog number (a population that features 7,073 notes graded by PMG and the 904 notes graded by PCGS Banknote), this Superb Gem is an extreme condition rarity.
