A rare Fr. 1700 1933 $10 Silver Certificate graded Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ sold for a record price of $70,500 in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Summer Expo. The price practically doubled the previous auction record for the one-year design type.
Often referred to as the “King of Small Size,” the 1933 $10 is among the rarest design types in all of small size currency with only around 50 examples presently known. The example sold was one of just three such notes graded at the 66 EPQ level by PMG, with just a single note graded finer.
This example came from the collection of Douglas C. Kaselitz and carried a pre-auction estimate of $25,000 to $35,000. The impressive $70,500 sum realized is certainly indicative of the tremendous demand in the marketplace right now for the best of the best in the realm of small size currency.
