The Stack’s Bowers Galleries November Baltimore Currency Auction Realizes Over $1.5 Million

Santa Ana, CA (November 22, 2019) – The Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo saw $1,510,700 in rare United States paper money trade hands between its Thursday, November 14 evening live session in Baltimore and the Tuesday, November 19 Internet-only session. In total, the Stack’s Bowers Whitman Winter Expo auction realized over $19,124,255 million across 16 sessions offering United States coins, tokens, medals and paper money. All prices include a 20% buyer’s premium.

Lot 10177, a Fr.212f 1865 $500 Interest Bearing Note graded Very Fine 25 by PMG brought the highest price of the auction. Formerly from the Joel R. Anderson Collection, it realized $264,000. Also pedigreed to the Anderson Collection, lot 10176, a Fr.150 1863 $50 Legal Tender Note graded About New 50 PPQ by PCGS Currency, sold for $192,000.

A previously unreported serial number 1 $10 1902 Plain Back from the First National Bank of Rosebud, Montana graded Choice Uncirculated 64 by PMG was the top selling National Currency note of the auction realizing $48,000 (lot 10361). Also among National banknotes, $45,600 was the price brought by a $10 1902 Red Seal from The Farmers National Bank of Kingfisher, Territory of Oklahoma graded Very Fine 30 by PMG (lot 10407).

Small size currency was led by a PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 Fr.2407 1928 $500 Gold Certificate that sold for $31,200 (lot 10305).

This was the firm’s final live United States currency auction of 2019.
