IRVINE, Calif. (March 7, 2014) — Stack’s Bowers Galleries is proud to present an array of American rarities in its upcoming March 2014 Official Auction of the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Baltimore Expo, March 26-29 at the Baltimore Convention Center.

All series are well represented by pieces certain to attract the attention of a broad cross-section of the numismatic community. Among early issues, a silver 1781 Libertas Americana medal will draw bids, as it was voted No. 1 in the Whitman book The 100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens. Also included is a 1776-dated (circa 1789) Washington Before Boston silver medal. High-grade state coppers of the 1785-1788 era will be presented, as is the historic 1776 Continental Currency dollar.

Among federal coins, a 1794 cent, Sheldon-31, grading MS-66 will command attention, and early silver coins, Liberty Seated issues, Barber denominations, and 20th century scarcities and rarities will be presented, as well as a Gem 1916 Standing Liberty quarter with Full Head. A choice Mint State 1797 BB-71 dollar is one of the finest offered in recent times. Morgan dollars include Carson City issues, rare mintmarks, Proofs, and more. An 1858 Proof set from the cent to the Liberty Seated dollar will also cross the auction block.

Among gold coins is a Proof-67 Ultra Cameo gold dollar from The Ed Trompeter Collection, a Gem Proof 1858 quarter eagle from The Louis E. Eliasberg Collections, and a Superb Gem Proof 1858 half eagle from The Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. A Gem Proof 1879 Stella will also be available for one lucky bidder. Early and late eagles in high grades will cross the block, including a Proof-68 1912 Indian ten. Gem Proof double eagles in multiples will cross the block, as will Superb Gem Mint State MCMVII (1907) High Relief double eagles of the wire rim and flat rim varieties, and many scarce and rare gold coins from dollars to double eagles.

A gold 1936 Nobel Peace Prize medal awarded to Argentinean scholar and statesman Carlos Saavedra Lamas will highlight the medal section. In the 1930s, Lamas worked effectively to end the Chaco War between Paraguay and Bolivia as he led efforts to build a consensus resulting in the acceptance of the 1934 South American Antiwar Pact, which was eventually signed by the representatives of 11 countries. In 1936, he was honored by election to the office of Assembly President of the League of Nations headquartered in Geneva (a predecessor organization to the current United Nations in New York). Other medals included in the sale are of interest and important as well.
