IRVINE, Calif. (July 1, 2014) — A multitude of collector coins, medals and tokens led the way as the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo brought in nearly $5 million during the live floor session.

The double eagle series was represented by some incredible rarities, including a very rare 1861-S A.C. Paquet Reverse from The El Dorado Collection, Part II, graded AU-58 by PCGS. Designed by Assistant Engraver Anthony C. Paquet, this double eagle reverse remains one of the only patterns positively attributed to Paquet. The Philadelphia Mint 1861 Paquet Reverse double eagle is a formidable rarity with just two examples known, while the 1861-S Paquet Reverse is very scarce in lower grades, very rare in Choice AU, and presently unknown in Mint State. The winning bid on this San Francisco Mint rarity soared past presale expectations and realized $188,000. Additionally, a 1906-S Liberty double eagle, formally from the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, commanded a strong $111,625. The coin, virtually pristine with vibrant luster, is one of the finest known examples of the issue in PCGS MS-66.
