IRVINE, Calif. (November 2012) — Stack’s Bowers Galleries realized an impressive $16,791,184 with 10 U.S. and world sessions conducted at the Official Auction of the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Baltimore Expo November 13-17, 2012. The entire auction saw nearly 10,000 lots cross the block, including 5,914 lots of U.S. coins and exonumia, 1,098 lots of U.S. currency, plus 2,970 lots of world coins and currency.

“Our November 2012 Baltimore Auction drew a huge crowd of bidders and strong prices realized for U.S. and world coin and currency lots,” said Chris Napolitano, president of Stack’s Bowers Galleries. “Our lot viewing sessions were completely full from start to finish, and competition between bidders was exceptional in all sessions. Many premium quality U.S. coins brought considerable prices realized, especially pieces from The Ted L. Craige Collection, The John “Jack” Royse Collection, and The Elmer C. Welden Collection.”

One of the most exciting lots sold was the 1652 New England sixpence. The extremely rare American coin was discovered in February 1990 as Lillian Rade searched through a frozen potato field in East Hampton, N.Y. The incredible discovery made national news and was even covered by “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not,” which illustrated the coin and told its remarkable story in a December 11, 1991 feature. The coin was then sold in 1991 for $35,000. Twenty-one years later, the same coin was available for sale at the Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Early American Coin session held in cooperation with the Colonial Coin Collectors Club, and sold for a record-breaking amount of $431,250.
