Attending the Whitman Winter Expo is always a pleasure. We enjoy catching up with our collector and dealer friends and meeting in person dozens of new enthusiasts who attend this event. Baltimore was also home to one of the most famous collectors of all time, Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. It was with great pleasure that we had on display at lot viewing a final handful of coins from this famed cabinet, items that were sold earlier this week.
It’s no surprise that we made the local news with WJZ-TV (CBS) and WBAL-TV (NBC) on deck with cameras and reporters as well as several news personalities doing on site interviews. John Kraljevich was the perfect on-camera personality giving a short biography of Louis and his impact on numismatics, while discussing two illustrious rarities that were about to cross the auction block. The landmark 1855 Kellogg & Co. $50 known as “King of Territorial Gold,” pedigreed not only to Eliasberg but to Augustus Humbert himself, crossed the block for a record price of $780,000. After heated competition, the legendary 1860 Clark, Gruber & Co. “Mountain Twenty” went to an extremely excited collector for $552,000.
