While my duties at Stack’s Bowers Galleries involve cataloging much of our United States currency auctions, I don’t always get to see every note in the sale before it goes live. So I was surprised while browsing the pages of our upcoming Las Vegas auction to spot a particular note that is very dear to my heart, an old friend you might say.
This week’s United States Currency auction features a Fr.2220-F 1928 $5000 from the Atlanta district. The note, graded Very Fine 30 by PMG bears serial number F00000143A. It was one of four ultra-high denomination notes that emerged together from east Tennessee in late 2006 when they were purchased by my dad, Barry. It was an incredible "out of the weeds" find and the best deal of his career as a professional numismatist. Also included in the deal were two of the now three known Fr.2230-F 1928 $10,000 Federal Reserve Notes from Atlanta and a Fr.2221-G 1934 $5000 Federal Reserve Note from Chicago.
The note offered in our current sale is evenly circulated and displays bright paper, ample margins and boldly printed design elements. It was last offered at auction in our 2009 ANA sale where it realized $83,375. The market for ultra-high denomination notes has certainly appreciated over the last decade. The note, lot 3454 of the auction, carries an estimate of $100,000-$150,000.
