Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ upcoming July Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo will feature a rare 1902 $10 Plain Back from the Baraga County National Bank of L’Anse, Michigan, Charter #9509. The note, from the Collection of Doug Kaselitz, is just the second large size note known from this bank. The bank was chartered on July 21, 1909 and issued just $69,110 in notes before going into receivership in June 1932. This rare bank also reports just a single small size note known.
The note is extremely well printed with bold inks and darkly penned bank officers’ signatures. PMG has graded the lightly handled note Choice About Uncirculated 58 EPQ.
L’Anse is the county seat of Baraga County at the base of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. In French, L’Anse translates roughly as “the cove” and describes the way the town sits on the bank of Lake Superior.
This Michigan rarity will carry an estimate of $10,000 to $15,000 when it crosses the block during our July currency auction with the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Summer Expo. To view lots and bid in this auction once posted just visit www.stacksbowers.com.
