In our ANA World Paper
Money Sale in Anaheim during August, we will feature a few very captivating
Canadian Proof Notes. The notes will be offered individually, thus giving multiple
collectors a chance to get their hands on these Uncirculated notes, many of
which come straight from the American Bank Note Company’s archives.
Leading the group is the
Union Bank of Canada’s 1886 $20 Face Proof from Quebec City, Quebec. This note
received a PMG grade of 64 Choice Uncirculated. It bears a very ornate design with
multiple motifs. The center image features two men walking a black and a white
horse through what appears to be the Canadian wilderness. A landscape image of
Quebec is on the right, with a woman leaning on a chair at left. The note also
contains guilloche counters at the top right and left with 20’s in the center
to signify the denomination. The note alternates “20” and “XX” in the ornate
border that decorates the face’s margins. This is the only example of this note
to be graded by PMG, and is certainly worthy of being added to any serious
Canadian Bank Note collection.
Two other face proofs
being offered individually are a $10 1917 Face Proof and a $20 1917 Face Proof
from the Canadian Bank of Commerce. The $10 Proof features allegorical figures
throughout the entire note with an angel at each side holding shields bearing
the number 10 indicating the value. The $20 note displays allegorical figures
at right resting on rocks that are nestled on a beach. Poseidon sits to the far
left holding his Trident. Both notes are black and white with the exception of
their vibrant and colorful centers.
Eight back proofs from
the Bank of Canada will also be offered. The proofs are from the Banque Jacques
Cartier, the Commercial Bank of Manitoba, the Bank of Hamilton, the Banque
Ville-Marie, and of course the Union Bank of Canada. All these notes feature a
unicolor ornate design with elaborate borders and grandiose fonts.
