Stack's Bowers and Ponterio is tremendously excited to present their May Hong Kong Coin and Paper Money auctiona monumental event that marks a decade of the firm's sales in Asia. The sale has generated a great deal of interest due to its vast array of rare coins and paper money, over 3,850 lots in total. The anticipation has only grown as the auction had to be postponed from March to May as the world has seemingly been on pause. Stack's Bowers and Ponterio hopes this exceptional sale will offer clients and bidders a chance to enjoy their enthusiasm for numismatics over the course of some very exciting and entertaining auction sessions.
"Buy the book before the coin." Sage advice if there is a book to buy. Every coin series in U.S. history has a book dedicated to it except one, Classic Gold. Minted from 1834 to 1839 and falling between the series of the old standard preceding it and the newer series that followed, Classic Gold quarter eagles and half eagles are betwixt and between. No comprehensive and authoritative reference guide has been written about these beautifully designed coins. Their story has never been told, until now.
The Stack's Bowers Galleries March 2020 Auction marked a successful kick-off to the firm's 2020 season of flagship U.S. coin sales. Originally scheduled to take place in Baltimore alongside the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Spring Expo, the auction was relocated to the Stack's Bowers headquarters in Orange County, California following the cancellation of all public events in the state of Maryland in response to the COVID 19 pandemic. Despite these uncertain circumstances, the sale realized astounding success, with most sessions earning considerably above their pre-sale estimates, which were determined when the catalogs were produced. In total, over $26.59 million worth of U.S. coins were sold, demonstrating the resilience of the coin market and Stack's Bowers Galleries' superior ability to connect bidders with rare and desirable numismatic treasures. In all, the firm's March 2020 Auction saw over $37.5 million in coins and paper money cross the auction block.
