Stunning BWC Portuguese India Specimen

Offered in our upcoming official auction of the January New York International Numismatic Convention is an absolutely stunning high grade 5 Rupias Specimen from Portuguese India.  This highly desirable BWC design shows exquisite detail and is often missing from even the most advanced collections. It is extremely difficult to find as a Specimen and nearly impossible to locate an issued note. This particular example is the first we have had the opportunity to offer. There are two seal types for this issue, with this note carrying the second variation.

Overall the note has great eye appeal with bold inks showing vibrant colors. An allegorical figure with trident seen at left. Perforated cancellation is seen above the governor’s signature panel. Counterfoil is fully intact with some light toning. PMG explains in the comments section of their holder that the note is unaffected by the issues in the counterfoil. The note carries a humble estimate of $3,750 to $4,250, a range likely to be exceeded as we anticipate spirited bidding on this rarity.

While we are no longer accepting consignments to our January NYINC Auction, we welcome consignments for our 2017 auction season. If you are interested in consigning or if you have a currency related question, please call 1-800-458-4646 or email Currency Specialist Aris Maragoudakis at amarkis@stacksbowers.com or Director of Currency Peter Treglia at petert@stacksbowers.com.
