A condition census example of an ever popular $5 Silver
Certificate type is being featured as lot
7088 in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ November U.S. Currency auction set to
cross the block this Thursday November 12. The offered Fr.282 Series of 1923 $5
Silver Certificate has been graded Superb Gem Uncirculated 67 EPQ by PMG and is
one of just nine examples of the catalog number to be graded at that level by PMG
with none finer.
Popularly known as the “Porthole” note, it is a one-number
type seen only with the Speelman-White signature combination. The portrait of
Abraham Lincoln is at center framed inside a heavy circular feature resembling
the porthole of a ship. Lincoln’s portrait was engraved by BEP engraver Charles
Burt, based on a photograph by Anthony Berger. The back is printed in green and
features the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States at center. This was
the last design type for the large size $5 Silver Certificates.
A single Fr.282* $5 Silver Certificate Star Note has been
graded as Superb Gem Uncirculated 68 EPQ by PMG. That note realized $43,200 in
our March 2020 U.S. Currency Auction.
The presently offered non-star example displays lovely
technical quality with deeply embossed paper, bright overprints and sharply
printed design elements. It carries an estimate of $15,000-$25,000.
Live bidding for the 217 lots in Session 6 of
the auction begins November 12 at 3 PM PST. The Internet Only session of the
U.S. Currency auction will commence at 9 AM PST on November 17th and offers 118
lots. To view all the United States coins, medals, tokens and paper money
