Six years ago, on February 9, 2016, Stack’s Bowers Galleries sold Part III of the D. Brent Pogue Collection for $17,135,313. There were many highlights in this impressive sale, but the highest price realized was Lot 3013, a 1793 Flowing Hair cent that was graded MS-65 RB by PCGS. In addition to being a conditional rarity, it also featured a wonderful provenance that included Richard H. Lawrence, T. Harrison Garrett, John Work Garrett, R.E. "Ted" Naftzger Jr., and Jay Parrino.?
Lot 3013 capped off an impressive run of 16 lots of Mint State Liberty Cap half cents and Flowing Hair cents that included pieces graded MS-66 and MS-67. Also included in Part III of the Pogue Collection were Capped Bust dimes and half dollars, three-dollar gold pieces, and Capped Bust and Capped Head half eagles. In all, 43 of the 158 coins in the auction realized over $100,000 each.
