Question: I am working on a 20th century type set and wonder if I should include just one type of Peace silver dollar or should I consider the 1921 issue to be a separate type and thus include two examples of this design?
Answer: In our opinion the 1921 Peace dollar — struck in high relief and much more pronounced in detail than the subsequent 1922-1935 issues — should be considered a separate type. The style adopted in 1922 has a flat field in shallow relief and is distinctly different. However, reference books, album pages, and other guides, which determine collecting preferences, have not recognized the 1921 as a separate type, so often collectors do not distinguish two varieties of the Peace design. Of course, the 1921 High Relief is interesting and has a fascinating story, so including it would only enhance a set.
