Online
bidding is open and catalogs are in the mail for the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official
Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo November 3rd
in Baltimore, Maryland. The live session of the auction features 467 lots of
Colonials, Obsoletes, Confederate Currency, Large and Small Type and National
Banknotes. The
Obsolete note section of the auction features 44 lots of rare Pennsylvania
banknotes that should be well received by collectors of the Keystone State.
Among them are a number of great Proofs including a $1 Color Proof from the
Bank of Pottstown that is estimated at $4,000-$6,000 (lot 10112).
Confederate
currency collectors will be treated to more than 70 live lots of Confederate
Treasury Notes, including a wonderful selection of notes from the Cabarrus
Collection. This collection comprises all four of the Montgomery issues, T-1
through T-4, as well as rarities like the T-27 $10 and T-35 “Indian Princess”
$5. The T-1 1861 $1000 from the collection is graded PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30
and is estimated at $25,000-$35,000 (lot 10129).
Among
Large Size type notes, a rare Fr.1133-F 1918 $1000 Federal Reserve Note from
the Atlanta district carries a pre-auction estimate of $25,000-$35,000 (lot
10256). The note is graded PCGS Apparent Very Fine 25. Collectors of small size
high denomination notes will be interested in an incredible Fr.2211-K 1934
Light Green Seal $1000 Federal Reserve Note graded PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ (the
finest PCGS graded example), is estimated to sell between $30,000-$50,000 (lot
10310). A Fr. 2221-G 1934 $5000 Federal Reserve Note from the Chicago district,
graded PMG Extremely Fine 40 Net, is expected to bring $60,000-$80,000 (lot
10311).
In
the National Currency offering, a pair of rare Florida nationals should garner
attention. The first is a 1902 $5 Plain Back from the First National Bank of Milton,
Florida, Ch. #7034 (lot 10339). That note grades Very Fine and is estimated at
$10,000-$15,000. Another 1902 $5 Plain Back from the First National Bank of
Vero, Florida is expected to sell for $15,000-$25,000 (lot 10340). That note
has been graded Very Fine 30 Net by PMG.
