The coronation of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon as king and queen of England was held on June 24, 1509 at Westminster Abbey in London. The new king’s father, Henry VII had died on April 21 of that year, and at that time Henry VIII’s actual reign began. Less than two months later, on June 11, Henry married Catherine of Aragon who had been betrothed to his late brother, Arthur. Previously, the marriage had been held up by issues that included papal dispensation and Catherine’s dowry, but as king, Henry VIII disregarded these issues, and the wedding took place.
The official coronation at Westminster Abbey was organized by Henry VIII’s grandmother, Lady Margaret Beaufort and was presided over by the Archbishop of Canterbury. There were great festivities throughout the land, and the country looked forward to a bright future with their young king and his beautiful new bride and queen. That the marriage would have a troubled future and lead to tremendous upheaval in later years, could not be foreseen on this splendid occasion.
