Hong Kong Internet Session Preview

Our live sessions for our Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio Hong Kong Showcase Auction have recently closed and a detailed recap of the big performers will be posted within a few days. Auction results can be found here. There is still time to get in on the action for our stellar August Hong Kong Showcase auction, as our internet sessions are still open. Session D (Online Coin session) can be found here and Session E (Online Paper Currency) can be found here. There are plenty of treasures to be found within these sessions, both of which close promptly on Tuesday August 26th at 8:00 PM Pacific time (Wednesday, August 27 at 11:00 AM Hong Kong Time). Be sure to check these out and bid before the sessions close!

One of our offerings in the online coin session is lot 50240, a lovely Mint State Tibetan 3 Srang. This piece displays a lion as the central motif, surrounded by stylized clouds and a linear border. Beyond that there are four separate Tibetan legends, each punctuated with the Tibetan symbol for endless rebirth. The Tibetan legend roughly translates to “The Gaden Palace, victorious in all directions” and since the Gaden Palace is the residence of the Dalai Lama, in a broad sense it refers to the Tibetan Government. The reverse design features a central inscription which states: “Weight: Three” and two arabesques surrounded by a linear border. It is important to note that “three” is expressed as the word three, rather than a numeral. Around this central design appear three groupings of Tibetan symbols translating to: “Cycle Sixteen, Year Seven” or BE 16-8, which is the year 1934. The coin displays some minor areas of appealing toning, with an abundance of luster to be found throughout. This exceptional piece is sure to bring a premium, so be sure to preview the piece and bid early!

For details on this coin and the rest of our Internet only sessions of our Hong Kong auction, please visit www.StacksBowers.com. While our Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio August Hong Kong Showcase Auction is closed for further consignments, we are currently taking consignments of Asian, world and ancient coins for our newly added December Macau Showcase Auction of Asian coins and currency (the inaugural show). We are also taking consignments for our November Baltimore and New York International auctions. Time is running short, so if you are interested in consigning your coins and paper currency (whether a whole collection or a single rarity) be sure to contact one of our consignment directors.
