The museum caliber John E. Herzog Collection of United States Treasury Bonds will be offered by Stack’s Bowers Galleries at the 2018 ANA World’s Fair of Money in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The collection, assembled over five decades by Museum of American Finance founder John Herzog, reflects America’s financial history and its development of capital markets.
The collection encompasses certificates ranging from 1837 to 2000 and features exceptional, historic items rarely offered publicly. Many of the items in the collection are either unique or one of just a few known. The hundreds of items in the collection include extremely rare United States Federal Interest Bearing Proofs, Mexican War era loans, World War I Liberty Loans and much more.
Also seen are 1837-1850 federal Treasury Notes and loan certificates that display amazing artistry, skillfully executed by the New York engraving firms of the period. One of the major highlights of the collection is the circa 1847 $5000 Treasury Note Specimen (Hessler X115E). This Ex-Vattemare Albums note is unique in Specimen form and carries a pre-auction estimate of $15,000-$30,000.
A vibrantly printed Loan of 1862 $500 Coupon Bond (Hessler X131I) features portraits of Abraham Lincoln and Salmon P. Chase and was issued to and redeemed by Civil War financiers. There are 30 of the original 39 coupons remaining on this example which is believed to be unique. This bond is estimated as $12,000-$24,000.
