2004 Gold 2000 Yuan Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Deng Xiaoping

Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio is pleased to offer a gold 2000 Yuan coin commemorating the birth of Deng Xiaoping in our April 2015 Hong Kong auction. Struck in 2004 to commemorate the centennial of the birth of Communist leader, Deng Xiaoping, the 5-ounce gold coin had a reported mintage of 600 pieces.

Deng, the son of a landowner, went to university in France in 1920-1924 and it was there he became involved in Communist politics. In 1925, he went to the Soviet Union and was involved in the Communist party until 1926.

Upon his return to China, he became a leader in the political and military organization of the Jiangxi Soviet, a communist colony in southwest China, established by Mao Zedong. Throughout the period prior to the 1949 Communist takeover, Deng rose in the party. He became a leading member of the more pragmatic wing of the Communist Party. This led to differences with Mao and his followers. Deng lost position with the Party, but in the 1970s he returned to power, and began to reform China’s economic policy to integrate more free-market elements. He remained a powerful leader, and helped bring stability to China following the Tiananmen Square protests in the late 1980s, and instituting reforms that made China a world power. He died on February 19, 1997.

The coin we are offering in lot 12110 of our April Hong Kong auction is graded Proof-69 Ultra Cameo by NGC, and has serial number 105. This important and large gold commemorative coin honors an important modern leader of Communist China. View and bid on this coin, along with our entire April Hong Kong auction at StacksBowers.com
