The JR-3 variety of the 1831 Capped Bust dime is
unremarkable in most grades and carries a Rarity-1 rating. It can serve as an
ideal type coin as it is readily available up through Choice Mint State. However, in Gem condition this variety becomes
formidably scarce. We are delighted to offer the very finest known example of
this die marriage, certified MS-66+
(PCGS), as part of our August 2019
ANA Auction.
This is a lovely Gem bathed featuring snow white frost
with just a tinge of champagne iridescence at the rims. The strike is
impressively sharp and has imparted uniformly intricate detail throughout the
design, making this a prized specimen for both specialists and type collectors.
Both sides are smooth and unblemished even under close inspection with a loupe.
This dime easily deserves the premium Gem Mint State grade awarded by PCGS. A
network of delicate die cracks linking the peripheral devices is as made.
This beautiful Gem represents the pinnacle of surface
preservation for the 1831 JR-3 die pairing, topping the Condition Census,
ranking above the handful of MS-65 and MS-66 examples that complete the roster.
We last handled this particular piece in our (American Numismatic Rarities’)
sale of May 2005 where it realized $12,650 in lot 131.
Notably, this coin had been certified MS-67 by NGC at the time of that offering,
emphasizing its premium quality.
This finest-known 1831 JR-3 dime will be a featured
highlight of our August 2019 ANA World’s Fair of Money Auction, where it will
be sold alongside incredible rarities from the Taraszka
Collection, the ESM Collection, and many others. Contact us now to
