Double Novodel of Elizabeth Offered in January 2022 NYINC Auction Thought to be Unique

Empress Elizabeth of Russia was born as Yelizaveta Petrovna of the Romanov Dynasty. Her parents were Peter I and Catherine I. Elizabeth was not originally in line to take the throne. But, after Anna Leopoldovna assumed the throne on behalf of her infant son, Ivan VI, Elizabeth was threatened with banishment from Russia. Elizabeth planned a palace coup to overthrow Anna and her infant son. The mother and son were arrested by the palace guard, and Elizabeth took the throne, reigning from 1741 to 1762.

This Novodel piece was struck in 1753, mid-way through Elizabeth’s reign. It is double the weight and double the thickness of a standard Novodel strike. Our world coin experts believe this piece to be unique and this offering provides a rare opportunity to purchase this treasure. The last time lot 4424 appeared on the market was in 1966. It is graded by PCGS as Specimen-63+ and exhibits prooflike surfaces. View the Salton Collection, Part I on our website.
