The term “novodel” originated in Russian numismatics and refers to a broad range of coins authorized by a money-issuing authority struck after their stated date. These coins appeal to many collectors and for a variety of reasons. Russian mints are famous for producing novodels and such pieces regularly cross the auction block.
Novodels are essentially restrikes, coins produced after the assigned date, often using very similar dies. Examples can feature dates that were and were not issued, and sometimes their production differed markedly from the that of the original coins. For example, some were struck in collars where the originals were not.
Other mints around the world have struck novodels, including the United States Mint. The most famous such piece from that facility is probably the legendary 1804 dollar. While the majority of collectors probably can’t acquire that particular rarity, there are many novodels that don’t cost in the millions of dollars.
Stack’s Bowers Galleries is auctioning a range of Russian Novodels from the Sigma Collection in our April 2023 Hong Kong Auction. To view lots in the Sigma Collection, please visit StacksBowers.com.
