As we get closer to the Stack’s Bowers auction held in conjunction with the ANA World’s Fair of Money in August, we continue to highlight many different world coins, from ancient Syracusan Decadrachms to Russian Platinum and last week’s German silver Talers. Today we feature not just a single gold rarity, but a whole set of expertly crafted Czechoslovakian gold.
These rare medallic coin sets were crafted in 1934 commemorate the reopening of the Kremnica Mint. The set contains gold issues in the denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 Dukaten, as well as a medal struck in silver. All five pieces bear the same design, with the obverse depicting Saint Catherine kneeling in prayer facing right, clearly identified by the wheel to her right. The arms of Kremnica appear behind her. The reverse design bears an intricate overview of the exterior of the mines, while the lower portion is a cut out of a mine tunnel featuring both modern and antique miners and their equipment. This is a rare set with mintages below 300 pieces for the smaller denominations and fewer than 100 pieces for the larger denominations. All are certified by PCGS and in Secure Holders. The 1 Dukaten, 2 Dukaten and the 10 Dukaten are MS-65, the 5 Dukaten is MS-64 and the medal is MS-62. This absolutely stunning set of coins is museum quality in every respect.
