1852 United States Assay Office $50.00
K-13, Octagonal, 887 THOUS.
Issued by the United States Assay Office of Gold while under the command of Augustus Humbert, these Ingots, the official government name for the issue, were also known as "slugs," "quintuple eagles," and "five-eagle" pieces, the latter two monikers courtesy of the Guide Book. The 1852 $50 is one of the stalwarts of the private gold discipline, and its fame as a Gold Rush issue is noteworthy.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in August 2019 ANA Auction, where it realized $66,000.
