Brian’s Rare Coin Market Report and Outlook February 23, 2017

I had the opportunity to
attend the Long Beach Coin Show last week and to speak with many high-end
collectors and dealers there as well as at private appointments in our
offices.  Without fail, I received consistent feedback that the overall
market was “firming,” while superb rarities were continuing to bring strong
prices and expected to bring stronger prices.

As our recent Pogue
Collection sales indicate, high quality rarities are being sold into very strong
hands and not expected to be back on the market in the near- or mid-term,
causing a supply shortfall across the board. Dealers are not able to find
needed items and collector’s want lists are long.  This lack of supply,
coupled with my knowledge of economics 101, indicate to me that prices will be
heading up in the near future.  In addition, our equity markets are
reaching all-time highs on a seemingly daily basis (as I write this “Dow hits
all time high” flashes across the bottom of CNBC), metals have made strong
positive moves since their bottoms just after the election, and President
Trump’s anticipated tax plan to cut corporate and individual income taxes could
mean more disposable income to be spent on rare coins and currency.  These
factors combined lead me to believe that the numismatic market in 2017 is
poised to perform very well.

While the mid-winter ANA
is just around the corner and will be a data point for market health, the
Whitman Baltimore Spring Expo and our auctions during the show will be the next
major data point.  The Whitman Expo is consistently ranked among
the most popular shows among collectors and dealers and our auction features
multiple “fresh” and “named” collections, as well as the D. Brent Pogue
Collection, Part V.  I have already been working with several clients who
are getting their affairs in order to be in a position to bid aggressively for
the Pogue, Blue Moon, and other fresh coins and collections in the sale. If I
can help you prepare to participate in this event, just give me a call.

I look forward to hearing
from you.

All the best,

Brian Kendrella
