On April 3, at our Hong
Kong paper money auction, we offered a 1951 10,000 Yuan from the People’s Bank
of China in Lot 70204. The note was certified as an About Uncirculated 50 with
serial number block 123. This 10,000 Yuan note, considered the most
desirable of the first series of Renminbi, was every bit worthy of the AU-50
grade. Some very faint handling and minor folds are noted, but no major netting
defects. The note was originally issued in Inner Mongolia and was not mass
distributed. Herdsman with horses are seen on the center of the face design,
with a muted purple-maroon border and underprint.
The lot opened at $80,000
and quickly gained steam. The bidding continued for over five minutes as phone
and floor bidders competed against each other. As the note broke $100,000 and
then $150,000, it became obvious that the end was not yet in sight. Finally
after spirited bidding, the lot closed at $300,000 hammer, realizing $358,500
total. We are very excited to share this realization with the world, and look
forward to the next time an exquisite piece such as this is discovered, and
given to us to offer.
