Today the Standing Liberty quarter design of 1916-1917 and the modified motif of 1917-1930 are among the greatest of numismatic favorites. Scheduled to cross the auction block at the Worlds Fair of Money the summer American Numismatic Association convention are four models created by the artist, Hermon A. MacNeil and descended through his family.
Set to cross the block in Stacks Bowers Galleries Official August 2012 Philadelphia ANA Worlds Fair ofMoney Auction is the famously rare Sacagawea dollar / Washington Statehood quarter muling. This remarkable error was first discovered in 2000 by Frank Wallis of Mountain Home, Arkansas, and that discovery piece was subsequently sold by Bowers and Merena at the August 2000 ANA Millennium Sale for $29,900. The sale of that coin spurred national interest in the misstrike, as it was dubbed by the U.S. Mint, and by autumn of that year several other examples had come to light, by which time a total of three different die pairs were recognized and described by David J. Camire, author and first authenticator of the variety.
Stacks Bowers Galleries, the Official Auctioneer of the Whitman Coins & Collectible Expo in Baltimore, is proud to present the blockbuster MCMVII (1907) Ultra High Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagle offered as lot 4438. The coin is the single finest certified example of the type in the absolutely stunning grade of Proof-69 (PCGS); no examples have been graded finer than this coin at either of the major grading services. As struck and pristine, the surfaces of this amazing Ultra High Relief double eagle are free of so much as a single trivial blemish. Swirling die polish lines in the fields are characteristic of the manner in which these coins were produced, and radiant yellow gold surfaces are aglow with a stunning satin to modestly semi-reflective finish.
