Stack's Bowers Galleries upcoming Official Auction of the Whitman Coin and Collectible Summer Expo will feature a number of important United States small size currency offerings. Among the more than 1,200 lots of currency offered in the auction is an impressive Fr. 1700 1933 $10 Silver Certificate graded Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ by PMG and pedigreed to The Collection of Doug Kaselitz. The small size rarity, one of just over 50 known, is estimated to bring $25,000 to $35,000.
Stacks Bowers Galleries is pleased to present the Rubin Family Collection as part of our Official Auction in conjunction with the ANA Worlds Fair of Money to be held in Rosemont, Illinois in August of this year. This small collection of gold, silver and copper coins includes the finest of three known Proof 1859 quarter eagles with the New Reverse hub style. The Rubin Collection example is graded Proof-65 Deep Cameo by PCGS, and is pedigreed to the famous and historic Amon G. Carter, Jr. Collection. Aside from being the finest New Reverse 1859 Proof quarter eagle, it is arguably the second or third finest certified quarter eagle of the date, the finest being the Harry Bass coin that is graded by PCGS as a Proof-66.
No fewer than 16 major price records were breached during the first offering of coins from the D. Brent Pogue Collection, sold in New York City on May 19 by Stacks Bowers Galleries in partnership with Sothebys. While the majority of coins brought record prices for their PCGS grade designation and variety, more than a dozen set new standards for any example of the date or major variety.
A nearly forgotten piece of history from the early United States space program returns to the fore with the recent consignment to auction of a rare American coin that traveled in space! The coin, a rare 1793 one-cent piece, also happens to have been made the first year that the United States Mint produced coins in large numbers for general circulation, so it is a particularly historic piece.
Stacks Bowers Galleries and Sothebys are pleased to announce the consignment of the finest certified 1907 Ultra High Relief double eagle, arguably the most beautiful coin design ever struck by the U.S. Mint. Graded and encapsulated by the Professional Coin Grading Service as Proof-69, this example last sold in the June 2012 Stacks Bowers Baltimore sale for $2,760,000.
