National Bank Notes

Question:  I am a collector of National Bank notes. On a note I recently acquired, I can’t quite make out the signatures of the bank president and bank cashier. I am wondering if there is any source that could help me identify the names?

Answer: The United States Treasury Department published a serial titled The Annual Report of the Comptroller of the Currency. Between 1867 and 1922 the names of bank presidents and cashiers are listed from year to year for each of the banks in the National Banking system. Beginning in 1923 that information was discontinued from the Annual Report and placed into a different publication. That publication was titled Individual Statements on the Condition of National Banks and continued into the 1940s. Both publications are available on the Internet through the website of the research library of the Federal Reserve Bank in St. Louis, Missouri, at www.fraser.stlouisfed.org.
