Though the live sessions of the Stack’s Bowers Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo are about to close there are still many numismatic opportunities to be found in the Internet Only Sessions. A plethora of interesting Ancient and World coins can all be found in the Internet Session D, starting Tuesday November 10th at 10:00 AM PT. One such item is this pleasing example of a Henry VIII Groat.
King Henry VIII, second of the Tudor dynasts, is best remembered for his separation of England from the Roman Catholic Church and his multiple marriages in pursuit of a male heir. He was also known for his role in the English Reformation, granting considerable power to the monarchy. In the realm of numismatics Henry VIII is less appreciated, as he oversaw the debasement of gold and silver coinage. The silver Groat featured here is from his second coinage series, the first to feature his portrait (the previous series utilized his father King Henry VII’s portrait). The portrait features a right facing bust with a larger, squarer face with a “Roman” nose and fluffy hair. The reverse design displays the coat of arms of the King, intersected by a cross. This lovely example boasts a dark plum hue, which comes to life under a light.
