Question: I have been offered a gold striking of the 1796 Castorland medal. I cannot find this listed in catalogs. What is it worth?
Answer: There are no original 1796 Castorland medals (or jetons) struck in gold. At the bottom of page 77 in the 2015 edition of A Guide Book of United States Coins you will find the listing for the Castorland medal. There it is noted: “Copy dies are still available and have been used at the Paris Mint for restriking throughout the years. Restrikes have a more modern look; their metallic content (in French) is impressed on the edge: ARGENT (silver), CUIVRE (copper), or OR (gold). The value of a gold restrike would depend on the market price of gold bullion at the time of purchase or sale.”
