A pair of significant events is on the horizon for the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Rare Currency Department. The two auctions, while occurring only a few days apart, will be held at near geographic opposites of the world. Our first sale will be the always important Official Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo held in late March. Just a few days later Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio will hold an auction in Hong Kong. Together these two sales will offer millions of dollars worth of collectible rare currency.
Our March Baltimore sale will be anchored by The Holecek Family Foundation Collection, made up of solely high denomination small size banknotes with an outstanding five $5,000 and three $10,000 Federal Reserve Notes. Also to be offered will be The Peter Mayer Collection, Part III, which contains a vast quantity of rare Obsolete proof banknotes, many of which are unique. Other important consignments bridge these two collections to form what will be our largest Baltimore paper money sale to date, with well over 2,500 lots to bid on.
Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio have been at the forefront of the auction scene for rare Asian paper money for some time now, and this upcoming April 2015 Hong Kong sale will continue that trend. Offered will be an important grouping of very rare notes from China and Hong Kong with an emphasis on quality. Rare notes in high grades will be available for connoisseurs to add to their collections.
We are still accepting consignments for these Showcase Auctions and encourage you to contact our rare currency department to discuss your consigning needs.
