The Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio December Macau Showcase Auction is just over a month away and the catalog is now available online and can be viewed here. We have a lineup of impressive coins for our auction coinciding with this inaugural Macau Showcase Coin Show. One highlight is a Tuan Chi Jui “Peaceful Unification” Dollar in gold, a classic rarity found in our auction as lot 32143.
Tuan Chi Jui was an important political player during the tumultuous era of Chinese history after the fall of the Imperial Regime. Tuan rose to power as an adherent of Yuan Shih-kai, and served in various political and military leadership roles through the early Republican era. He eventually rose to Chief Executive of the Republic, and acted as the most powerful man in China between 1916 and 1920. By this time China had entered the “Warlords Era” after the death of Yuan Shih-kai in 1916. Military cliques loyal only to their warlord sprang up across the major provinces. During his tenure as the Chief Executive of the Republic (acting President) Tuan’s governmental underlings commissioned special coins to celebrate the “Peaceful Unification” of China supposedly brought about by Tuan. In reality China was neither united nor peaceful.
The obverse features the slightly left facing bust of Tuan Chi Jui in formal civilian attire, with a nine character inscription above; “Commemorative Issue of the Seizure of the Government by the Republic of China.” The reverse design features an ornate wreath surrounding two characters denoting “Peace.” This piece is housed in a PCGS Specimen 61 holder with prooflike surfaces and considerable eye-appeal.
