Upcoming Events: Welcome to Our June Sale
Welcome to the latest in our long series of auctions with the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Baltimore. The event, to be held June 26-27, 2014, features hundreds of dealers, thousands of attendees, and a venue that is very pleasant. Located in the Inner Harbor area of Baltimore, the Convention Center is close to fine hotels, restaurants and shopping.
No city in America has a deeper numismatic tradition than Baltimore. The first major collection formed in our country, the Robert Gilmor, Jr. cabinet, was assembled here. T. Harrison Garrett and John Work Garrett collected coins from 1865 to the late 1930s after which it was willed to The Johns Hopkins University. Our sale of this incredible holding still echoes. Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. did something no one had ever done before and will never do again: acquired one example of each date and mintmark of federal coinage from the 1793 half cent to the 1933 double eagle. Our series of Eliasberg Collection sales will be forever remembered.
We are honored to be the official auctioneer — ever since the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expos were launched. This Expo and our auction will be a magnet for collectors, dealers, and other enthusiasts nationwide. It is the place to be for endless activity for several days.
We hope to see you there!
Sale Highlights
Our Baltimore sale is anchored by The El Dorado Collection, Part II. Consigned by McLoughlin family, our presentation emphasizes double eagles from the San Francisco Mint (in which patriarch George McLoughlin was prominent more than a century ago) as well as other issues, including a beautiful MCMVII High Relief Saint-Gaudens twenty that he bought directly from the Mint at the time of issue. Greatly expanded by his grandson, the collection came to include purchases in our own era — the premium Gem 1906-S (earthquake year) double eagle from our sale of The Eliasberg Collection being one of many notable examples.
Selections from The Harold Bareford Collection await you as well. If you are an old-timer, you will remember our sale of this estate years ago. From other consignors, a key 1875 half eagle, a Mint State 1909-O of the same denomination, a rare 1795 eagle, an even rarer 1865 Proof $10, and Proof double eagles of 1882 and 1907 are among the treasures in the gold series.
An 1862, Abraham Lincoln Indian peace medal of museum quality will attract attention from near and far, as will a gold Washington funeral medal from dies engraved by Jacob Perkins. On the more affordable side, The Raymond W. Dillard Collection of Elongated Coins, Part VII will appeal to specialists.
Among federal coins you will find a wide selection from the 18th century to the modern era. Scarce varieties and design types abound. As you look through the pages to follow you will find many items of interest and importance.
