IRVINE, Calif. (June 2, 2014) — One of the highlights of the Stack’s Bowers Galleries ANA World’s Fair of Money will be The Dr. James A. Ferrendelli Collection of Early American Gold Coins. This offering is by die varieties, not just Guide Book varieties, and is one of the most comprehensive of its kind to be offered. As an example, the quarter eagles from 1794 to 1834 encompass each and every one of the 29 different die varieties and combinations listed in the Bass-Dannreuther reference, which is unique in the history of auctions. By definition, the collection includes both die varieties of the famous and rare 1796 No Stars quarter eagle. The 1796 BD-1 is a Rarity-7+, the classic 1804 with 13-star reverse is another landmark, and all others are included. Each is in high grade and has excellent eye appeal. Classic Head quarter eagles from 1834 to 1839 are likewise complete by die variety, including mintmarks, comprise 28 different varieties in high grades, including rare Proofs of 1836 and 1837. This is the first time in numismatic history that each and every quarter eagle from 1796 to 1839 has been assembled and offered at auction—signaling an event to be forever remembered.

Half eagles commence with 1795 and are especially rich in die varieties through 1814, with the vast majority of those listed by Bass and Dannreuther. Varieties after 1814 continue through 1834 and include a selection of rarities. Classic Head half eagles from 1834 to 1838 are also memorable.

Eagles from 1795 to 1804 are likewise notable and include most of the die varieties within this span. There are four of the Capped Bust Right, Small Eagle design type, including a 1795 13 Leaves, BD-2, and the rare and important BD-3 variety of the year — the famous 1795 9 Leaves Reverse —one of the most desirable of all early eagle issues. Another rarity is the 1797 BD-1. The Capped Bust Right, Heraldic or Large Eagle design type is represented by 13 pieces that range from 1797 to the end of the design type and denomination in 1804, the last in seldom-seen Mint State preservation.

Dr. Ferendelli formed his collection over a period of years with a connoisseur’s eye for rarity and quality. Stack’s Bowers Galleries is honored to showcase his accomplishment.
