IRVINE, Calif. (October 8, 2013) — Paper money scarcities and rarities, especially in the National Bank Note series, will highlight a special section of the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo, Thursday and Friday, November 7–8, 2013. The currency will be part of an auction program that also includes colonial coins featuring The David M. Sundman Collection of Massachusetts Silver Coinage, federal coins from half cents to double eagles, Proof gold rarities, and more.
Featured paper money includes a landmark offering from The Watermelon Collection Part II. From colonial issues to large-size and small-size federal currency, over 300 lots include many key rarities, showcasing National Bank Notes in particular.
“Nationals of Pennsylvania and Ohio are among the most important we have ever offered,” said Peter Treglia, director of currency for Stack’s Bowers Galleries. “From new discoveries to unique notes, featured are certain rarities that have not appeared on the market for years.”
Ohio rarities include an Original Series $5 of the First National Bank of Cadiz, a $50 1882 Brown Back from the First National Bank of Canal Dover, a Series of 1875 $10 issued by the Fourth National Bank of Dayton, an 1882 Date Back $20, the unique$100 1882 Value Back from the Winters National Bank of Dayton, and a serial No. 1 $5 1902 Red Seal from the Third National Bank of the same city.
Among the many Pennsylvania rarities are an Original Series $1 on the Birmingham National Bank of Pittsburgh with the curiousBirmingham, Pennsylvania imprint; and a newly discovered 1882 Brown Back $10 from the Enterprise National Bank of Allegheny. From the city of Pittsburgh, Original Series Lazy Deuces from the Iron City National Bank and the Allegheny National Bank are bound to attract a lot of attention, as will the unique $100 1882 Brown Back from the Diamond National Bank, a previously unreported 1875 $20 of the Fort Pitt National Bank and one of just two 1902 Red Seal $5 notes known from the Cosmopolitan National Bank.
Among other Nationals an Original Lazy Deuce from the Muncie (Indiana) National Bank, a $50 1882 Brown Back from Louisville, a $5 Original Series $5 from the First National Bank of Marseilles, Illinois, and a $1 Original Ace from Lebanon, Indiana are highlights. “Often opportunity is the key word when building a collection of Nationals,” said Treglia. “And, opportunities abound here!” A $5 1882 Brown Back from the First National Bank of Havre de Grace, Maryland will draw attention, as will a Lazy Deuce from the Second National Bank of Watkins Glen, New York, among many others.
Rounding out the auction are many Silver Certificates, Federal Reserve Bank Notes, Legal Tender Notes, popular small-size issues including World War II emergency bills, and other popular series and varieties.
