IRVINE, Calif. — The currency department is pleased to present the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo currency sale, Thursday, November 7, 2013. Over 750 showcased lots will be offered to the collecting community, in addition to the 300 lot Internet-only session, closing on Tuesday, November 12, 2013.
Participants can expect notes from all facets of American paper money, from Colonial times to modern day Small Size Currency. A diverse selection of historical currency from the Colonial to Obsolete banknote issuing periods commences the public auction session. Rare New Hampshire colonial notes including a superb August 24, 1775 3 Pounds, formerly from The Boyd Collection, will be sold. Rare obsolete proofs are showcased, including a specialized Philadelphia collection with rare color proofs and well vignette rarities from the 1990 American Banknote Archives sale. Chester L. Krause, publisher and longtime collector, has consigned further notes from his vast holdings, including rare lumber company scrip note sheets and individual rare scrip notes, many plated in his Wisconsin obsolete note reference.
Federally issued notes of the United States are the focal point of the Stack’s Bowers Galleries paper money sale, with important National banknotes from The Watermelon Collection Part II leading the way. The second part of this sale follows our well-received and extremely successful offering of Large Size type notes featured in our August 2012 Official Auction of the ANA World’s Fair of Money, and includes a diverse and extraordinary variety of National Banknotes with countless rarities from Ohio and Pennsylvania. Seven of the coveted “Lazy Deuce” designs are part of this collection. Nevada will be a highlight state in this auction as well with eight elusive notes offered from the “Battle Born” state. Popular Large State notes with many important condition rarities are catalogued for the sale and highlighted by an important 1890 “Ornate Back” $10 Treasury Note in PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
Small Size Currency, currently used and always in vogue with collectors, includes a monumental discovery item that will certainly excite collectors. The note is a previously unknown 1928C $10 “Star” replacement from the Chicago district, serial number G00647785*. Renowned currency experts Peter Huntoon and Jamie Yakes commented on the discovery: “We therefore realized that only a small fraction of the 7,200 that might have been printed ever got out. In fact, we consider it a miracle that any reached circulation. The 1928C star shown here was not an expert note.” Other Small Size rarities in this sale include a mid-grade 1933 $10 Silver, among others.
