IRVINE, Calif. (November 2013) — Stack’s Bowers Galleries is once again gearing up for another stellar auction as the Official Auctioneer of the November 2013 Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo. Please join us November 6–8, 2013, at the Baltimore Convention Center, as we present this impressive auction that will feature U.S. coins, currency, tokens and medals, world coins and paper money, and ancient coins. Selections from many important collections will be showcased here, including pieces from The David M. Sundman Collection of Massachusetts Silver Coinage, The Just Having Fun Collection, The Badlands Collection of Commemorative Gold Coins, The Richard Moore Collection of Fugio Coppers, and The George Gardner Collection, to name a few.
Among minor U.S. coinage are a number of significant highlights, including an 1867 With Rays Shield nickel graded Proof-66 Deep Cameo by PCGS and the premium Gem 1880 nickel in MS-66 (PCGS). Both pieces hail from The Just Having Fun Collection and, at the top of the population, are sure to cause excitement as they cross the block. The George Gardner Collection features a wonderful selection of Walking Liberty half dollars that includes an incredible 1921-D in MS-66 (NGC), and a stunning 1921-S in MS-65 (NGC). Silver dollars boast a beautifully toned 1893-CC Proof example in Proof-65+ (PCGS). The mintage of this branch mint Proof is uncertain, but we estimate that the survivorship is around 10 to 12 pieces. This particular survivor is a true Gem and is sure to see a great deal of activity.
U.S. gold coins offer a nice selection of pieces and are highlighted by a number of important rarities. The Badlands Collection of Commemorative Gold Coins features both octagonal and round examples of the 1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 “slug”— both beautiful Gem coins. The octagonal example is graded MS-65 by NGC and the round example is certified as MS-65* by NGC, the star referring to the exceptional eye appeal that the piece displays. Territorial gold issues are undoubtedly highlighted by lot 2160, an intriguing 1851 Humbert Lettered Edge $50 gold piece. Graded AU-58+ by NGC, this coin is rare and desirable as a type coin, but its true appeal lies in the curious error seen on the edge of the piece, where a second OF GOLD was punched over the date 1851. This is almost certainly a unique error, so bid accordingly!
The sections of regular issue U.S. gold coinage also contains a number of significant pieces, like the famed 1854-S quarter eagle offered as lot 2173. One of just a dozen or so known, this ex: Davis-Graves Sale-Norweb specimen is graded VF-35 by PCGS, exhibits wonderfully original surfaces, and is certainly one of the most visually appealing survivors of this issue available. Two lots later appears the finest known 1863 Proof Liberty quarter eagle in the outstanding grade of Proof-66 Deep Cameo (PCGS). This truly breathtaking coin has also been granted a green CAC sticker, attesting to its solid technical quality at the assigned grade level. With only 30 pieces struck of this Proof-only date, we expect serious competition for this beautiful rarity when it crosses the block.
Double eagles will be highlighted by lot 2242, an extraordinary Deep Cameo Gem Proof 1881 example that is tied for the finest seen by PCGS. Graded Proof-65 Deep Cameo and awarded a green CAC sticker, this coin is simply stunning in terms of visual appeal. The razor sharp strike and glorious cameo contrast combine to make this piece one of the finest survivors, of which there are only estimated to be between 18 and 20 coins.
Stack’s Bowers Galleries is proud to once again partner with the Colonial Coin Collectors Club (known as C4) to present a special auction session dedicated to colonial coins. This special session will be held on Friday, November 8 at 6 p.m. ET, and will offer more than 300 lots of high quality rarities. Featured here is The David M. Sundman Collection of Massachusetts Silver Coinage, as well as coins from The Richard Moore Collection of Fugio Coppers, and other important properties.
The first three lots of the session are sure to be showstoppers, as they include an extremely rare Noe 1-A Massachusetts Bay Colony NE shilling, a lovely Noe 1-A Willow Tree shilling, and a spectacular Willow Tree sixpence — all pieces from The Sundman Collection of Massachusetts Silver in remarkable condition — made even more remarkable by their extremely low survivorship rates. The Richard Moore Collection presents a wonderful selection of Fugio coppers, epitomized by the classic Newman 11-A rarity offered as lot 4239. Graded AU-50 by PCGS, there is generally stiff competition for pieces in this condition range, so be prepared to bid liberally!
Federally issued notes will be the focal point of the Stack’s Bowers Galleries U.S. paper money sale, with important National banknotes from The Watermelon Collection Part II leading the way. The second part of this sale follows our well-received and extremely successful offering of Large Size type notes featured in our August 2012 Official Auction of the ANA World’s Fair of Money, and includes a diverse and extraordinary variety of National Banknotes with countless rarities from Ohio and Pennsylvania. Seven of the coveted “Lazy Deuce” designs are part of this collection. Nevada will be a highlight state in this auction as well with eight elusive notes offered from the “Battle Born” state. Popular Large State notes with many important condition rarities are catalogued for the sale and highlighted by an important 1890 “Ornate Back” $10 Treasury Note in PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
Small Size Currency, currently used and always in vogue with collectors, includes a monumental discovery item that will certainly excite collectors. The note is a previously unknown 1928C $10 “Star” replacement from the Chicago district, serial number G00647785*. Renowned currency experts Peter Huntoon and Jamie Yakes commented on the discovery: “We realized that only a small fraction of the 7,200 that might have been printed ever got out. In fact, we consider it a miracle that any reached circulation. The 1928C star shown here was not an expert note.” Other Small Size rarities in this sale include a mid-grade 1933 $10 Silver, among others.
