IRVINE, Calif. (November 15, 2013) — Leading numismatic auction house Stack’s Bowers Galleries conducted its Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo from November 6–9, 2013. In total, the three-day sale, which included U.S. and world coins and paper money, realized nearly $15 million.

“It was non-stop from beginning to end,” said Brian Kendrella, president of Stack’s Bowers Galleries. “Dedicated to collectors, the auction had something for just about everyone, from popular issues to landmark rarities.”

A particular highlight was The David M. Sundman Collection of Massachusetts Silver Coins — one of the most exciting offerings in recent decades — comparable in certain aspects to the company’s sales of The Hain Family Collection in January 2002, and The John J. Ford, Jr. Collection in October 2005. Three of the Sundman specimens in the NE and Willow series realized stellar six-figure prices, and many others crossed the block at the five-figure level. The Sundman NE shilling and Willow Tree shilling both realized high auction price records of $440,625 and $282,000 respectively. The Friday evening session, held with the Colonial Coin Collectors Club, opened to a packed crowd and bidding remained active throughout the night. Among other early American issues, a 1788 RR-35 Vermont copper in the modest grade of VF-25, commanded a winning bid of $30,550.
