This week I am highlighting a very special collection that was brought into our New York store last week.
Just a couple of weeks back I received a phone call from a collector who was interested in having his long-held collection assessed for possible consignment. We scheduled a meeting, and he presented a lovely complete Shield nickel set along with a stunning gem set of all the Proof Buffalo nickels. These sets, along with multiple others, were acquired decades ago and the client was understandably interested in the current numismatic market and how our auctions work. After a wonderful, lengthy numismatic conversation, we got to know each other, and the client came to understand his coins even better. While the Proof Buffalo nickels are perfect auction pieces, the coin that demands attention in this group is the 1880 Shield nickel. The difference in value between the Proof and the elusive business strike is extraordinarily substantial, and to confirm this item’s status, we are sending it (along with the rest of the set) for certification on behalf of the client. This is not typically what we do, but for such a fresh original collection we are happy to make accommodations, even prior to official auction consignment. Our experts in the New York store feel strongly that this truly is a Mint State circulation strike rarity, as it possesses the most vital diagnostic possible: the die chip under the second T in STATES on the reverse.
