Few banknotes in the Czechoslovakia catalog truly cause collectors to stop in their tracks when they see it like the treasure in lot 60244 of our January 2024 NYINC Auction. This 1919 500 Korun is among the most significant notes in the entire Czechoslovakia catalog. I have only seen one other issued example surface in a public auction and that was nearly a decade ago. This example seems far nicer and will surely excite collectors not just of Czechoslovakia paper money, but the big game world paper treasure hunters as well. It is graded PMG Choice Very Fine 35 with PMG Comments “Split.”
This note features a couple with a child at center in one of the more striking vignettes we’ve seen for Czechoslovakia. Over 60,000 Austrian counterfeits were printed, and even those warrant a real premium. Trying to determine just how valuable the sole graded PMG example is, especially when it is this nice, is a difficult exercise. We have therefore conservatively estimated this treasure, and leave it to our esteemed bidders to determine the final price when it crosses the auction block on January 13, 2024 in New York City.
