Trio of Iconic Ultra-High-Grade Rarities Featured in November 2023 U.S. Currency Showcase Auction

Among the panoply of paper money issued by the United States since 1861, several notes stand apart as iconic examples of numismatic Americana. Notes like the Educational Series of 1896 and the Series of 1899 $5 Silver Certificate (better-known as the “Chief”) are instantly recognizable and in strong demand from the novice as well as the most advanced specialist.  Stack’s Bowers Galleries is pleased to present a trio of iconic notes that are conditional rarities in our November 2023 Currency Auction.

The first is perhaps among the most recognizable of United States notes. Issued from 1901 until the early 1920s, the 1901 $10 Legal Tender Note colloquially known to collectors as the “Bison” is instantly recognizable. In lot 20111, we are proud to offer an example of this ever-popular note that stands alone as the finest graded of its catalog number. Graded Superb Gem Uncirculated 67PPQ it retains the originality of the day it was printed over a century ago. With bright ruby-red overprints, unparalleled eye appeal, and boardwalk margins, finding another “Bison” of comparable quality will be a difficult task.

The second, in lot 20154, is among the finest-known examples recorded of what is among the most visually stunning notes issued by the United States. This 1896 $5 Silver Certificate retains the visual appeal of the day it was printed almost 130 years ago; the details and colors cannot adequately be described without having it in-hand. With the added appeal of a two-digit serial number and a premium grade this note is sure to please the next person lucky enough to own it.

In lot 20170, Stack’s Bowers Galleries is pleased to offer a lovely Series of 1899 $5 Silver Certificate, better known to most collectors simply as the “Chief.” Graded Superb Gem Uncirculated 67 by PMG with the coveted EPQ designation this note is the finest graded example for the Friedberg number by PMG. With exceedingly original color and boldly rich details this note is in every way exceptional and sure to be tightly held by its next proud owner.

For those who seek the absolute best, the November 2023 U.S. Currency Showcase offers the advanced specialist multiple opportunities to augment their holdings. Opportunities like these are rare, and who knows when (or if) another such group of iconic top-pop notes will come to light? These notes will cross the auction block on Friday November 17, 2023.
