Sensational 1929 $100 Kansas City Star Note, the Only Gem Known, Offered in November Expo Auction

One of the most impressive notes in our upcoming November 2023 Whitman Winter Expo Showcase currency auction is a Gem 1929 $100 Star note, cataloged as Fr.1890-J* and offered in lot 20256. The note, from the Kansas City district is graded PCGS Banknote Gem Uncirculated 65 PPQ. This marks the first time a Gem caliber “replacement” note of this district will cross the block.

According to BEP records, just 12,000 replacement notes were produced, and in high grade the number known is quite small. This Gem Unc 65 PPQ is the sole finest graded by either PCGS Banknote or PMG; the finest seen at PMG is a 64 EPQ.

Demand for an important note such as this will be quite strong, especially as it is currently unique at this grade level. Back in 2015 we sold a similar note, the sole highest graded $100 Replacement note from the Chicago district, which realized $58,750 after very spirited bidding. Eight years is a long time to wait for another opportunity. Do not let it get away!
