New Jersey Coppers Abound in the E Pluribus Unum Collection

Stack’s Bowers Galleries has been honored in our 90-year history of auctioning the finest colonial and pre-federal coin cabinets ever formed. Names like Garrett, Roper, Oechsner, Craige, Norweb, Ford, Kendall, Picker, SLT, Royce, Martin, and countless others have graced the covers of our catalogs (and those of our predecessor firms Stack’s, Bowers and Ruddy, and Bowers and Merena) dating back generations.

On Wednesday, August 16 at 10 AM PT, we will be presenting Part IV of the E Pluribus Unum Collection. Like the first part of this magnificent cabinet, the focus here is on 107 New Jersey coppers (as well as a selection of very pleasing Saint Patrick’s coinage), an astounding assemblage that contains 96 distinct Maris numbers! You might remember Part I, sold in our November 2019 sale, had 110 different Maris numbers and was a monumentally important sale. This second group is truly another historic offering!

If you are a specialist in this exciting pre-Federal series, Session Four of our August Global Showcase Auction is not to be missed. While specialists and seasoned collectors will focus on the Rarity-5 and higher die pairings or Condition Census level specimens, there are many lots that feature “type” coins, perfect for collectors looking for just a single representative New Jersey copper. Popular “Red Book” varieties, overstrikes, die states, and rarities offer something for every New Jersey copper collector. If your goal is to hit a certain number of Maris varieties (many collectors strive for 100 distinct die pairings), you can certainly find a variety that is currently missing from your cabinet.

Highlights of the E Pluribus Unum Collection, Part IV, include:

Lot 3014. 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 6-C, W-5040. Rarity-4. Pattern Shield. VF-35 (PCGS). A lovely “Pattern Reverse” type.

Lot 3016. 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 10-G, W-4740. Rarity-6. No Coulter. VF Details–Scratch (PCGS). A coveted No Coulter rarity.

Lot 3018. 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 11.5-G, W-4785. Rarity-6+. No Coulter. Fine Details–Environmental Damage (PCGS). This is the Maris-Garrett specimen, last sold in our 1984 sale of the Richard Picker Collection—what a great provenance!

Lot 3028. 1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 16-J, W-4835. Rarity-5+. Straight Plow Beam, Protruding Tongue. VF-35 (PCGS). A Condition Census level example of this very rare early “tongueless” state of the obverse.

Lot 3063. 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 37-X, W-5145. Rarity-6+. Outlined Shield, Goiter. VF Details–Environmental Damage (PCGS). An important, exciting, and very rare “Goiter” variety, considered one of the “stoppers” in the series.

Lot 3084. 1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 49-f, W-5470. Rarity-5. Head Left. Fine-12 (PCGS). Really choice for the grade.

Lot 3089. 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 52-i, W-5280. Rarity-3. Outlined Shield, No Sprig Above Plow. AU-55 (PCGS). Unusually nice and a perfect “type” coin!

Lot 3097. 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 59-o, W-5325. Rarity-5+. Sawtooth. EF-40 (PCGS). An always popular die variety, with a great old time pedigree.

Lot 3110. 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 70-x, W-5410. Rarity-7-. Plaited Mane, Missing Eye–Overstruck on a Counterfeit English Halfpenny. VF Details–Environmental Damage (PCGS). One of about a dozen examples known. This appears to be new to the census and is probably ranked among the top half dozen known.

Lot 3115. 1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 75-bb, W-5520. Rarity-4. Running Fox Before Legend. AU-55 (PCGS). A high grade Running Fox, clearly among the highest graded examples known.
